San Francisco street sweeping holidays

By SweepBeep Editorial Team ·

San Francisco suspends some street cleaning on city holidays, but not all of it. On New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas nothing is swept. On the other holidays, daytime routes stop while night routes and posted holiday schedules keep running, so a holiday is not automatically a free pass to park.

Next holiday

Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11

Regular daytime sweeping is off. Night routes (starting before 6 AM) are still enforced, and blocks with a posted holiday schedule are swept.

2,248 curbs are still scheduled that day, 824 of them on a holiday schedule.

Where this comes from

Dates and the citywide rule come from the SFMTA holiday enforcement schedule, which lists nightly street sweeping as not enforced on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas and enforced on every other holiday. That daytime routes stop on the other holidays comes from an analysis of about 1.35 million citations by the open-source curb project; our alerts still warn for any block flagged as swept on holidays. Posted holiday schedules come from the SF Public Works sweeping dataset. Dates marked projected follow the pattern of SFMTA's published years. Until SFMTA posts the official list, we do not skip any sweep on a projected date. When in doubt, the sign on your block wins.

Frequently asked questions

Is there street cleaning on Veterans Day in San Francisco?

Daytime routes are suspended, but SFMTA lists night sweeping as enforced and blocks with a posted holiday schedule are swept. Check your block before parking overnight.

Is there street cleaning on Thanksgiving or the day after?

None on Thanksgiving Day. The day after Thanksgiving follows the minor-holiday rule: daytime routes off, night routes and holiday schedules on.

Is there street cleaning on Christmas and New Year's Day?

No. Those are the two holidays, with Thanksgiving, when nothing is swept anywhere in the city.
